October, 1863

Major Bogart was buried 13 paces due South from a double trunk tree on a road from Springfield Landing to Mt. Pleasant. You will, coming from below, enter a plain - two roads keep the one to the right. When nearly across the plain, on your left you will see a double tree. 13 paces to the left from the tree (due South) is a grave marked plainly with headboard and inscription.

Major Bogart was buried without a coffin. His remains can be known by finding upon the collar of his blouse, in which he was buried, the leaf, the insigna of his rank. If the search was from Mt. Pleasant, proceed up the road passing the first cross road turning to the right at the 2nd. About 100 yards from this point is the tree mentioned before, only would be on the right of the road, and the grave to the right of the tree. I do not anticipate any trouble in finding the grave.

PS - The grave is about 100 yards in direction of the river from point occupied as Head Quarters by General Dwight and Nickerson after the assault of the 14th June.

NOTE: This letter includes a hand written map of the roads described above and the location of the tree and grave.
