Headquarters 162nd NY Vols
Camp Mansfield, LA February 26th, 1863
Dear Father,
Your letter by steamer Columbia and Mothers by steamer Roanoke have been received. Also papers by both mails.
My expedition and return from Plaquemine resulted in my being Court Martialed and fined but was fully
acquitted of all the charges but one, specifications for which I received a repremand. Col Benedict goes
home in steamer next week and will remain in New York long enough to consult some doctors. Of course you
will call and see him he can explain my trial much better than I can write about it.
I have heard nothing from John except that he had sold my horse but not got the money and I am afraid
John like he won't get it for some time. We have been paid but owing to my having to purchase another
horse and pay Col Benedict for my share of the ????? ???? send but little home.
The mail closes now and I will write a few lines again by Sunday's mail.
