Before Port Hudson June 20th, 1863
Dear Sir,
I write you for the first time in my life to convey unwelcome news. An assault was made upon the enemy's
works on Sunday, June 14th when many good men were made to bite the dust and I am sorry to say your son
James was among the number. He fell when you would have had him fall, at his post doing his duty.
He was struck in the hip by a shell. His remains have been conveyed to Baton Rouge and there buried.
I miss him very very much but what can my loss be compared to yours.
Lieut. Raymond formerly of Albany and now in the 177th Regt. and one of James former friends in concert
with the officers of the Regt. procured a coffin and he was sent to Baton Rouge as I before stated under
care of Sec. Lt. Finley of Co. B this Regt.
His effects will be taken in charge until pleasure is known.
I remain Yours Truly,
W.B. Eager, Jr.
Surgeon 162nd Regt. NYV
