New York, June 30th, 1863
Dear Sir,
We have received information that Major James H. Bogart, son of my brother John was killed on the 14th
before Port Hudson. His death has brought much grief into the family circle and I write to implore you
if possible to obtain posession of his body and have it conveyed to New Orleans and interred by the side
of my brother Issac who died a resident of that city and whose widow is now residing there and will give
you all necessary aid and information. In consideration of our former friendly intercourse, and for the
sake of administering some consolation to his bereaved parents, I impose upon you this melancholy task.
As regards myself, I should esteem it a high personal favor.
Sincerely Yours,
Henrietta Brinkerhoff
Mr. Houghtailing, a friend of my brothers, who resides in New Orleans, will assist and direct you in any
way you desire. My brother wishes me to say to you that the name of his son is not among the list of killed
and wounded in the official account of the 14th and that he has received no letters from Col Benedict who
faithfully promised to give him the earliest information should any accident occur.
The only information has been obtained from a letter of the Col to his own family. You are aware I presume
that Major Bogart was attached to the (3rd Metropolitan) 162nd N.Y.S.V.
