Early Spencer Family Thomas Spencer, along with four of his brothers and sisters, sailed from England for America in 1631. The Spencer family in England dates back to the early 1500s. This family history will start with Thomas Spencer, as he was the first of our descendents to come to America, and end at Charles Ellis Spencer.

1. Thomas Spencer arrived in America in 1631 and settled in Hartford, Connecticut. He married Ann Derifield in 1634 and had three children. She then died and he married Sarah Bearding in 1645 and had six more children. He died in 1687. 2. Obadiah Spencer was born in 1639 in Hartford, Conn. He married Mary Disborough. They had seven children: 11 Obadiah Jr., b. 1666 12 Thomas, b. 1668 13 Samuel, b. 1670 14 Ebenezer, b. 1673 15 Mary, b. 1675 16 John, b. 1677 17 Disborough, b. 1679

11. Obadiah Spencer Jr. was born in 1666 in Hartford, Conn. He married Ruth Kelsey. They had five children. Obadiah Jr. died in 1741. 18 Obadiah III, b. 1695 19 Stephen, b. 1701 20 Johnathan, b. 1703 21 Daniel, b. 1705 22 Caleb, b. 1709

19. Stephen Spencer was born in 1701 in Hartford, Conn. At an early age, he moved to Guilford, Conn. He married Obedience Bradley in 1724. They had nine children: 23 Christopher, b. 1747 (other eight children names unknown)

23. Christopher Spencer was born in 1747 in Guilford, Conn. He married Olive Stowe in 1768. They had six children. Olive died in 1783. Christopher then married Olive's sister-in-law Mary Pierson who was a widow. They had five children. The children listed below were only from his marriage to Mary Pierson. 24 Stephen, b. 1785 25 Alanson, b. 1787 26 Achsak, b. 1790 27 Harvey, b. 1793 (died as infant) 28 Harvey, b. 1795

25. Alanson Spencer was born in 1787 in Guilford, Conn. He was a ship's captain. He married Ann Rose in 1809. Alanson died in 1817, at age 30. They had three children: 29 Ann, b. 1810 30 Charles Christopher, b. 1814 31 Elizabeth, b. 1816

30. Charles Christopher Spencer was born in 1814 in Guilford, Conn. He moved to Brooklyn and married Mary Jane Hurley. They had five children: 32 Alanson, b. 1841 33 Mary Jane, b. 1843 34 Charles Ellis, b. 1848 35 Frank, b. 1847 36 William Henry, b. 1855

34. Charles Ellis Spencer was born in 1848 in Brooklyn, New York. He was a stock broker. He married Henrietta Bogart in 1876. Thus began the Spencer/Bogart family. Click on the link below to get back to the Spencer/Bogart family page.
